The Apprenticeship Program is a training program approved by the Division of Apprenticeship Standards (DAS) and Board of Barbering and Cosmetology (Board) that allows a trainee, called an apprentice, to earn a wage while studying to become a cosmetologist, barber, or electrologist under the guidance and supervision of a trainer in an establishment licensed by the Board.
In this program, students are able to earn while they learn with a Barber Apprentice License to work in a shop full-time from 32-40 hours a week for 20-24 months or 3200 hours. After completing all the requirements of hours, operations, and tests, students will be able to apply for the State Board Exam for a Barber license.
Upon completion of signing up and paying the enrollment fee, students need to do the following:
Attend 39 hours of Pre-Apprenticeship training.
As part of the 250 hours of Related Supplemental Instruction (RSI) - Classroom instruction of Theory during the 2 years. To learn to have a good understanding and be ready to take the State Board Written Exam.*
*TNN uses updated technology to help our students succeed in passing the State Board Written Exam.
On-The-Job Training:
After the Apprentice License is issued, the apprentice needs to start working in the approved shop with their trainer full-time, 32-40 hours a week over 2 years. The trainer is to keep track of the student's hours and operations on the Barber's OJT log sheet. This is one of the unique aspects of the apprenticeship program because our students can be making money while getting training on the job.
